Colour photography from 1909-1912
This series of photos by Russian photography pioneer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii offers a surreal glimpse into the pre-revolutionary Russian landscape. Some are more than a century old, depicting landscapes, buildings, and people as they were at the turn of the century. Some are so crisp that it’s hard to believe they’re so old. I’m so accustomed to associating black-and-white with the era that some of the people in these photos simply appear as if they’re in modern times, dressing anachronistically.
