Stubborn kid tries to prove point, meets completely unsurprising fate
Mr. Sunderland wasn’t thrilled when his 16-year-old daughter, Abigail, decided to follow her big brother’s lead and seek the title of youngest person to sail solo around the world.
“I said I’m not sure I’m ready to go through this again as a parent,” Mr. Sunderland said in a telephone interview several weeks ago. “It’s tiring. It’s nerve-wracking. It’s a combination of emotions that aren’t all good. But it does increase our faith, which is a good thing.”
That faith is now being severely tested as the California family orchestrates a rescue mission for Abby, who has vanished while sailing from Africa to Australia. According to an update on her blog, an emergency distress beacon onboard her 40-foot yacht was manually activated Thursday and communication lost.
Well, I won’t say I told you so because I just heard about this today. But I hope we’ve all learned an important lesson about young people not being good at things. Listen to your parents, kids.
And godspeed to the family in finding the girl. I’m not completely heartless.
